Dry Land Distillers Announces USA’s First 100% Straight Rye Whiskey from Regenerative Organic Certified® Colorado Rye

Distillery Currently Accepting Preorders Through Newly Launched Bottle Club.

Longmont, Colo. – July 17, 2024 – Dry Land Distillers, the Colorado small-batch craft distillery and tasting room in the heart of downtown Longmont, has announced the release of the first 100% malted Straight Rye Whiskey crafted from Regenerative Organic Certified® (R.O.C.) grain. This rare whiskey is distilled from Ryman Rye grown by Jones Farms Organics, the first R.O.C. grower in Colorado. Dry Land Distillers will release the first of three barrels (100 bottles) on July 27, 2024. The distillery is currently accepting preorders for this much-anticipated R.O.C. rye whiskey through its Dry Land Bottle Club, and any remaining bottles will be available at the distillery on the same day.

“We’re incredibly excited about launching the first straight rye whiskey in the country made with 100% R.O.C. grain. Our collaboration with Sarah and Michael at Jones Farms Organics has been amazing. They are leaders in regenerative agriculture and understand both the short-term and long-term benefits regenerative practices offer,” said Dry Land Distillers Founder Nels Wroe. “Their Ryman Rye is a great expression of what we’re trying to achieve with ingredients from the American West, Colorado-grown grains, and our distillery’s approach to creating complex and sustainable spirits.”

Dry Land Distillers’ Ryman Rye has been years in the making. The distillery partnered with the only R.O.C. grower in Colorado, Jones Farms Organics, to grow the Ryman grain for its first-ever rye whiskey. Ryman rye is a hardy grain that thrives in Colorado’s semi-arid climate, and is known for its robust, spicy flavor and its ability to reduce water use while keeping precious topsoil in place. This partnership allowed Dry Land to locally source their grains, which were malted in nearby Fort Collins, Colorado, by Troubadour Maltings

Jones Family Organics began the R.O.C. journey with Dry Land Distillers to address critical aquifer shortages throughout Colorado’s San Luis Valley and the rapid degradation of topsoil conditions throughout the region. The R.O.C. designation originated with the Rodale Institute, which created the R.O.C. rating to improve upon, and fill in the gaps of, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Organic seal. R.O.C. uses the USDA Certified Organic standard as a baseline, and adds important criteria and benchmarks that incorporate the three major pillars of regenerative organic agriculture into one certification: soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness. Led by the Regenerative Organic Alliance, which includes brands like Dr. Bronner’s, Patagonia, and now Dry Land Distillers and Jones Farms Organics, Regenerative Organic Certified® (R.O.C.) designation helps consumers make informed choices about their food purchases.

“As multi-generational growers in the San Luis Valley, we see the serious negative consequences of over-pumping water and exhausting the soil. Regenerative practices are key tools that directly address these impacts,” said Sarah Jones. “Partnering with producers like Dry Land Distillers to bring our R.O.C. grains and produce to consumers is a critical step to enable better farming practices and to encourage consumers to make everyday choices that can change our world for the better.”

Dry Land Distillers and its Ryman Rye is the first rye whiskey made from grain that meets or exceeds all of these rigorous R.O.C. standards. This 100% malted Ryman Rye is a quintessential expression of Dry Land Distillers commitment to sustainability. Jones Farms Organics champions rye in the San Luis Valley for its ability to reduce the farm’s water usage, build soil health, and diversify crop rotations. The result is a grain-forward, silky smooth spirit with layers of spice, a wonderful mouth feel, and long finish.

Dry Land Distillers will be releasing its first barrel of Ryman Rye, the Origination Barrel with a 4 char of approximately 100 bottles, on July 27, 2024. Bottles are $109 with the first 12 bottles being released at barrel strength in a silent auction at the release on July 27th.

Dry Land Distillers is proud to have won the 2023 Good Food Awards and the Slow Food Snail of Approval among many gold and silver medals from international spirits competitions. Most recently the distillery won Double Gold/Best In Class for their Native Colorado Gin at the 2024 International Women’s Spirits Competition. The company is a proud supporter of the Colorado Grain Chain and Zero Foodprint, two nonprofit organizations that are pivotal in reshaping the way we drink and eat in Colorado.
