The Good Food Awards, for many of us foodies, is like the Oscars but for the nourishing and delightful foods and beverages that we treat ourselves to in our daily lives.

Winners of the Good Food Awards are chosen through a rigorous blind tasting and sustainability vetting process that confirm candidates' outstanding commitment to sustainable environmental and social practices.

This year there were nearly 2,000 entries. Of this, 215 exceptional food and beverages makers were recognized as Good Food Awards Winners.

The Colorado Grain Chain is delighted to share that several winners were Colorado businesses - and even more excited to share that many of them are Colorado Grain Chain Members!

Primitive Beer:
Effectively Seasoned by Primitive Beer

Primitive Beer is a small family-run beer blendery that produces one very specific style of spontaneously fermented wheat beer inspired by Belgian Lambic. Primitive’s beers are turbid mashed, koelschip inoculated, and barrel-fermented. Their brewery is committed to supporting local agriculture and only uses Colorado-grown ingredients. The resulting beers have a refreshing tartness, contemplative funk, and are meant to be enjoyed upon release or aged for years to come.

“This award is distinctly meaningful to us as a couple creators with an obstinate stance on the roles and responsibilities of local craftspeople. The Good Food Foundation exists to “support passionate and engaged players in the food system who are driving towards tasty, authentic and responsible food in order to humanize and reform our American food culture,” and we are super proud to be identified as contributors towards this goal!” says Brandon Boldt.

Boldt shares that “Recognition of this beer, in particular, warms our heart as Effectively Seasoned is a six-year assemblage of Primitive Beer, which delicately summarizes our entire range of production in Longmont within a single bottle. This accolade feels like a fitting way to end one chapter and begin the next.”

Pueblo Seed & Food Co:
Colorado Mountain Muesli by Pueblo Seed & Food Co.

Pueblo Seed and Farm’s mission is to renew and strengthen communities by stewarding the land and guiding the health of seed, food and people. They grow a diversity of certified organic crops on 30 irrigated acres including open pollinated seeds, chile peppers, varietal garlic, mixed vegetables, legumes and heritage grains, which are sold in the form of seeds, fresh produce and value added products at the Seed & Bakehouse in Cortez, Colorado. The Colorado Mountain Müesli was inspired by the Swiss mountains and Nanna’s background in ski racing and the need for energy while training endless hours on glacier snow while growing up.

“Our Colorado Mountain Müesli is made with Colorado Grown Grains that we trialed and scaled over several years. The blue corn flour in this Müesli provides an extra nutritional boost and gives the product a beautiful blue color when cooked,” says Nanna Meyer.

“Through cooperation with Colorado grain chain partners, such as Pastificio Boulder and Heartland Mills, we were able to successfully launch our cereal line in early 2021,” says Meyer.

Pastificio Boulder:
Heirloom Wheat Zucca Pasta by Pastificio Boulder

Pastificio Boulder is a craft pasta company primarily working with organic heirloom and ancient wheat varieties. It is based in beautiful Colorado and founded by Claudia Bouvier and Ted Steen. Their unique flour blend is freshly milled and combines four varieties of wheat grown by local Colorado farmers, including Jones Farms Organics. Pastificio Boulder pastas celebrate America’s rediscovery of the flavors of real wheat showcasing heirloom and ancient varieties of organic wheat that have deeper character, more interesting flavors, higher nutritional value and are considered more digestible than conventional wheat.

“We are absolutely honored,” says Claudia Bouvier. “It is an incredible recognition of our craft, and we are thrilled to be part of the larger movement towards ‘good food’— a distinction we understand to mean ‘good’ in every sense, delicious, good for our bodies, communities, environment, biodiversity in the agricultural system, and the planet as a whole.”

Her partner, Ted Steen, adds: “Winning these awards challenges us to continue growing the dialogue—and the action—towards a better food system. We are part of a like-minded group of artisans and innovators who, in close collaboration with sustainable farmers, have a unique platform to engage with consumers and to educate them not only about heirloom wheats, but also about the larger impact of their choices as home cooks and diners.”

Congratulations from the Colorado Grain Chain

It is incredible to witness the result of deep dedication to locally grown grains and craftsmanship! In previous years we have seen Colorado Grain Chain members flourish, including Dry Land Distillers, Our Mutual Friend Brewing, and Pastificio – we are proud to see this good work continue to grow. Congratulations to Pastificio, Pueblo Seed & Food Co, and Primitive Beer for outstanding recognition with the 2024 Good Food Awards!
